MONDOLKIRI AND KRATIE

In the footsteps of the elephants of Mondolkiri, to discover the Dolphins, The IRRAWADDY (Orcaella brevirostris)

We offer a 5-day tour 4 nights in Mondolkiri with its elephants and Kratie with its freshwater dolphins

Mondolkiri

Mondolkiri, in the south-east of Cambodia near the Vietnamese border, is an extremely wild region, made more accessible to travelers since the tarmac of the Sen Monorom Road, the main town of less than 10,000 inhabitants at 530 kms from Siem Reap and 800 m of altitude. Between jungle, hilly landscapes and ethnic minorities, trekking in Mondolkiri is a special experience away from the major tourist boulevards of Cambodia.

It is in the heart of the jungle in the footsteps of our guide, with a sense of direction and knowledge of the fauna and flora (even medicinal plants) of the jungle unmatched,
that you can feed the elephants, bathe with them, wash them. Our guide will explain the life of these elephants in freedom.

You will also visit, on the same day, a Phnong village (also called Bunong or Mnong) who constitute an autochthonous minority (about 30,000 out of the 15 million Cambodians) of mountaineers, living in isolated villages. They practice subsistence farming, hunt and fish. Unlike the mainly Buddhist Khmer people, they are animists and speak an exclusively oral minority language. While the phnongs were statistically in the majority in Mondolkiri, since the development of the region, other Cambodians have been attracted by the abundant land or to hold the infrastructure and benefit from tourism. The Phnong culture and the natural area itself is in danger: exploitation and disappearance of the forests consequently leading to the extinction of the elephants (to the practical and spiritual role), a minority more and more neglected and marginalized.

KRATIE

Kratie is a city of Cambodia, capital of the province of the same name. It is located on the Mekong.

A visit to the city of Kratie is a great opportunity to enjoy the peace and relax. The city has many historical and cultural remains dating back to medieval and colonial times.
But the main attraction for visitors is the observation of the Mekong dolphins

on the natural site of Kampi composed of dozens of small islands and aquatic plants. It is 15 kilometers north of Kratie. Its bridge Prek Kampi offers a magnificent view of the entire river and also allows you to admire the dolphins Irrawaddy.

The dolphins of the Irrawaddy are now endangered species in Cambodia. These cetaceans are unique in their shape and size. The species measures more than 2m long, its head has a rounded shape and its dorsal fin is short.
